New Engine FAQs
Why migrate to a new engine?
As Fields of Mistria has continued to expand throughout Early Access, the game has outgrown its original engine. To deliver the best possible experience for players, we have been working hard behind the scenes to transition the game over to an internally developed engine.
The goal of this engine migration is to improve overall stability and performance, eliminate crashes, support a wider range of hardware configurations, and make future development smoother as the game continues to expand and we begin to explore porting to additional platforms. The new engine will also improve support for modding, making mods easier to create, update, and manage in the future.
What does this mean for mods?
Mods created for the previous engine version will not be compatible with the new engine. Players using existing modded saves may experience unexpected issues with modded content. When installing mods after this update, please make sure they are specifically made for the new engine to ensure compatibility.
We know this transition may temporarily disrupt some players' mod setups, and we thank everyone for their patience during this process. We're incredibly grateful for the creativity and hard work of our modding community, and this migration will ultimately provide a stronger foundation for modding, making it easier to create and maintain mods and enabling even more customization possibilities.
For modders, we’ve created a guide and documentation to help understand the new engine: https://github.com/NPC-Studio/mistria-sdk
0.16.2 Patch Notes:
[Highlights]
Migrated Fields of Mistria to a new internal engine.
General performance optimizations and stability improvements.
Improved support for integrated graphics, allowing Fields of Mistria to run on a wider range of hardware.
Added native support for Steam Deck, which will improve performance.
Resolved the longstanding JSON Parse Error and Dragon Shrine Error bugs through the new engine migration, eliminating two of our longest-standing technical issues.
Added support for Linux + SteamOS. Note: Fields of Mistria only supports Linux through Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 ("steamrt4") on Steam OS. Attempting to run Fields of Mistria outside Steam, in another distro, or in another runtime is not officially supported, and the game may not run as intended.
[Steam Deck]
On Steam Deck, we expect better, more stable performance with a smaller memory footprint. To enable the native version, make sure "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is unchecked in the game's Compatibility settings. This option is disabled by default, so most players won't need to make any changes.
